HOPE in Awaran- Relief Activities

An earthquake measuring 7.8 magnitude struck district Awaran and Kech in Balochistan on the 24th September, 2013. The worst affected areas are districts Awaran and Ketch. In district Awaran, an estimated 123,209 people were affected, and in district Kech, approximately 9,224 people were affected. According to the initial assessment, the earthquake killed 557 people in Awaran and 44 people in Kech. There are also a significant number of injured people. The number of those reported as dead may be more than that as people were trapped under rubble. This has been observed as a high risk in Tehsil Mashkay. The earthquake caused widespread damages, destroying houses and cutting communications. Almost 90% houses in Awaran, with the exception of Tehsil Jahoo, and 90% houses in union council Dandar in Kech were completely destroyed, 10% were partially damaged. All infrastructure including schools, health facilities, mosques, Madrisah, and roads are damaged. Water and sanitation systems are completely destroyed.

HOPE an NGO in Pakistan,  in its efforts to help the earthquake affectees visited Mashkay and Mashi in district Awaran in order to distribute dry ration, blankets and P&G products. Approximately 1000 families were given ration and blankets whereas 500 families received P&G purifier of water, pampers, safeguard soap, baby wipes, always and Ariel.

When the team asked the local doctors about the health related issues, they informed HOPE’s team that some of the most common diseases people suffer in this area include skin infections, diarrhea, malaria and most importantly scorpion bites.

Despite the risky conditions of district Awaran, HOPE team was able to distribute the donation items to the deserving earthquake affectees who are totally dependent upon the generous support of both the NGO sector as well as

the government.

HOPE Opens Pehla Qadam Clinics

HOPE, a health NGO inPakistan, which runs under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla child specialist in Karachi, strives to achieve best possible ways to cater the health requirements of the deprived community in Pakistan. In its efforts to improve the health facilities, HOPE NGO in Pakistan has entered into collaboration with Pehla Qadam to treat patients with Club Foot through its network of hospitals in Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal and Hub.  Patient diagnosed with Club Foot will be treated free of charge in HOPE’s hospital in Soldier bazaar, which a secondary care facility and HOPE hospital Thatta. HOPE home schools and hospitals located in various slum areas in Karachi and Interior Sindh, will serve as platforms where mothers will be informed and educated about early diagnosis and treatment of club foot. Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla child specialist in Karachi particularly emphasizes on the importance of trainings in order to build the capacity of HOPE employees. Doctors of Pehla Qadam Clinics will be trained on Ponseti Method to treat club foot patients. 

Introducing Pakistan Sign language Visual Dictionary with HOPE's Formal School Students

Sharing knowledge is only difficult, when understanding student is beyond your reach… It has never been easy to teach young minds but the difficulty only arises when the teacher doesn’t understand child’s psychology, the problems he is dealing with, and the difficulties he faces while studying.  

A new study finds that skilled readers do not rely on sounds when reading but rather retrieve words purely from a "visual dictionary”. HOPE an NGO inPakistan, under the leadership of Chairperson Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla a childspecialist in Karachi, collaborated with Family Educational Services Foundation to carry out a workshop in its efforts to educate the young minds according to new trends and new studies. The workshop titled “Introduction to Pakistan Sign Language Visual Dictionary” was about teaching children comprehend different words through visual art. During this workshop teachers were trained and equipped with IEC materials to implement this type of teaching methodology.

Teaching methodology includes teaching students approximately twenty five new words every week, with the help of visual art. A schedule/planner is given to the teachers to carry out the review process.

To check the effectiveness of this teaching methodology, students of two classes are divided in two groups; a control group, where teaching methodology is the same as it was before and an experimental group, where the new teaching methodology is implemented. The module for implementing this experiment has been handed over to the teachers. The teachers are trained to comply with the experimental rules. So far they have been successful in implementing the given module. The students are also responding well to the new teaching mythology.  The experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of visual art teaching will be completed in a month and post intervention tests will be conducted after its completion.

These types of interventions are significant so as to understand the child psychology and their learning behavior. They prove to enhance the learning abilities of students and they also help to address the educational requirements of students.

Spreading HOPE during the Month of Sacrifice

Eid al-Adha or "Festival of Sacrifice" is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims all over the world to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma'il) as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead. During this month Muslims, all around the world, reach out and share the meat with others, especially with the poor.

Many impoverished in our country hardly get a chance to eat a proper meal. They are always waiting for the month of sacrifice to be able to eat a fulfilling meal in order to satiate their hunger. HOPE, in continuation of its efforts to help the poor, distributed meat amongst twenty thousand nine hundred and fifteen families out of which one thousand families were given meat in Thatta, five hundred families were given meat in Badin, two hundred families were given meat in Sujjawal, six fifty families were given meat in Karachi including  areas  such as Bilal Colony, Mujahid  Colony, Manzoor Colony, Bhittiabad, Sachal Goth, Abdullah Shah Gazi Goth, Ghagger, Link road, Gadaap and Rahri, Eight hundred and fifteen families were given meat in  Muzzaffargarh  and two fifty families were given  meat in Muzzafarabad. Many of these families were the ones who do not even know where their next meal will come from.

Qurbani 2013

Qurbani 2013 - Support HOPE in reaching out more underprivileged people this Eid. Muslims all over the world celebrate Eid-ul-Azha in the month of Zil Hajj, commemorating the great sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim (pbuh). In this regard, some of the companions asked the Prophet (pbuh) regarding the significance of this sacrifice, the Prophet (pbuh) is reported to have replied: “It is the Sunnah of your father, Abraham (pbuh)”. Therefore HOPE, an educational NGO in Pakistan which is run under the leadership of Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla, the child specialist in Karachi and the Chairperson of HOPE aims to reach out to all those poor and needy who neither can afford to sacrifice an animal nor get to have meat throughout the year like the privileged ones. Eid-ul-Azha is less than about 02 weeks away, and we at HOPE are preparing hard to distribute Qurbani meat and donations to poor and underprivileged areas specially those are which is affected by the flood across Pakistan. HOPE has an extensive network of hospitals and schools in Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, Muzaffargarh and Muzaffarabad (AJK) in which extremely poor families reside. Income levels in these areas average as little as Rs. 3,000 – 4,000 per month with an average family size of 8 members. Often, they do not know where their next meal will come from. Like as previous years, HOPE plans to perform Qurbani and distribute meat to the poor in rural Sindh, Thatta, Badin, Muzaffargarh and Muzaffarabad (AJK). As HOPE strives to have a society where individuals are aware of the basic rights and have equal opportunities to not only access health and educational facilities but to have all the privileges and blessings of life. In this regard, contributions from people all over Pakistan and outside Pakistan make our actions possible and we aim to reach as much poor people as we can. This Eid-ul-Azha, let HOPE perform Qurbani on your behalf and allow HOPE NGO in Pakistan to distribute meat and alms to the poor and needy.

Balochistan Earthquake Relief Appeal!

HOPE - a health NGO in karachi, plans to provide medical aid to the earthquake affectees in different districts of Balochistan. This earthquake has killed at least 327 people and left thousands more injured and homeless in a remote region of southwestern Pakistan. More than 300,000 people have been affected over a total of six districts - Awaran, Kech, Gwadar, Panjgur, Chaghi and Khuzdar. Many houses are flattened and thousands of people are spending nights in the open.

HOPE has previously been involved in providing emergency relief activities to individuals affected by natural catastrophes. Such as, in 2005 earth quake of Kashmir, in 2007 cyclones and floods in Interior Sindh and Balouchistan, in 2008 earthquake of Balouchistan, 2010 and 2011 flood in Sindh. It plans to reach out to those who have been majorly affected by this disaster and help them in whatever way possible to get them back to their routine life.

It is feared the death toll could rise once other areas are reached. The number of wounded is reportedly more than 440. Therefore, it is requested to support HOPE in its endeavors to help those who need it the most by providing medical aid, team of doctors, food relief, shelter, tents etc.

HOPE a health NGO in Pakistan is well known non profit organization which caters health and education in Pakistan. This organization is running under the leadership of Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla, the renowned child specialist in Karachi and the Chairperson of HOPE in Pakistan. She Has more than 50 research papers in indexed scientific journals and has carried out various research projects with different organizations including UNICEF, Center for Disease Control (CDC) Atlanta, WHO, Results for Development, etc. It is the result of her efforts that she has won several international awards and honors. 

Recently Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla has been awarded Honor Award Certificate in winning the Nakano Citation for her achievement in the project associated between intense hand washing promotion and early childhood health development in Karachi, Pakistan. For this project by  CDC, center of disease control Atlanta (USA), did a random cluster of sample of five hundred children, which was successfully completed.
